Why Do I Need To Overshare When I Can’t Answer The Phone?

I blame technology

Is it a symptom of our times that we are expected to be at everyone’s beck and call at whatever time of day they want to contact us?

Years ago it wasn’t hard. We’d go out, come back in and there was a note from our dad saying;

John phoned. Can you call him back

John probably phoned not even expecting us to be in.

These days because of the pervasiveness of mobile technology we are expected to be there whenever anyone wants us. If we aren’t it leaves us in an awkward situation.

Why aren’t you there?

Why haven’t you got your mobile inches away from you at all times like everyone else?

I missed a call from someone the other day.

They left a voicemail.

When I replied, I felt obliged to explain why my phone wasn’t glued to my hand. It was charging and on silent.

I apologised for missing the call.

Why?

I have a life.

I don’t have to be at the end of the phone whenever people want me but unfortunately, that is what the iPhone generation has created.

If we have a phone it should be with us.

We should be contactable.

And if we aren’t, then we need to say why.

How dare we have a life away from the phone!
